The original XM3 represented a bold departure from the traditional M40 series—a shorter, lighter precision rifle built to meet the evolving needs of Marine Scout Snipers. Recreating it as faithfully as possible was an ambitious undertaking, and the result is the TYPE-A XM3, a commercial rifle that honors one of the most unique precision rifle programs ever developed.
The History Behind the TYPE-A DARPA XM3
In 2003, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) began exploring the development of a new bolt-action precision rifle for the United States Marine Corps. By 2005, the XM3 program had taken shape around a clear set of performance requirements developed with input from Marine Scout Snipers.
The objective was straightforward but demanding: create a lightweight, short-action precision rifle capable of accepting a sound suppressor while maintaining exceptional long-range accuracy. The platform also needed to integrate clip-on night vision devices without requiring the day optic to be re-zeroed after removal. Improved optics, an enhanced stock design, and suppressor compatibility rounded out the program’s primary goals.
Development of what became known as the M40XM series began with Iron Brigade Armory (IBA). Starting with the proven Remington 700 short action, IBA made numerous refinements to produce one of the lightest and most durable precision rifles of its era. The barreled actions were carefully bedded using titanium-filled Devcon and Marine-Tex compounds to maximize strength and consistency while minimizing weight. McMillan developed a dedicated fiberglass stock for the program, while Nightforce supplied a specialized NXS 3.5–15×50 optic tailored specifically for the XM3.
After evaluating five different prototype configurations, IBA finalized the XM3 design. One of the greatest engineering challenges proved to be the barrel profile and length. The rifle needed to maintain the accuracy required to keep a 10-inch group at 1,000 yards while remaining compact and maneuverable for field use. Following extensive testing of various contours and barrel lengths, the team selected an 18.5-inch barrel with a unique profile that balanced rigidity, weight, and handling.
Remarkably, the project progressed from concept to completion in just 12 months—a rapid pace made possible through the collaboration with Iron Brigade Armory rather than the traditional timeline associated with many government acquisition programs.
Following successful development, the Marine Corps Precision Weapons Section (PWS) at Quantico, Virginia, produced only 52 rifles bearing the XM3 designation. These rifles saw operational service in Iraq between 2006 and 2012.
In 2014, the Marine Corps transferred the remaining XM3 rifles to the U.S. Army, which later transferred them to the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). When they were eventually offered for sale, they commanded prices well beyond initial expectations. For many collectors, it marked the first opportunity to purchase a documented, complete U.S. government-issued sniper rifle through the CMP.
