The MIRS (McCann Industries Integrated Rail System) mount was originally designed and produced by McCann Industrial back in the early 2000s.  The MIRS rail was designed to attach devices both in the front and on the side of your rifle.  It also allowed large diameter glass by providing you clearance on the mount to accommodate the front lens.

Use this lightweight aircraft aluminum rail to equip the top and side of your M24 rifle with night vision (PVS), holo sight, and/or laser aiming devices.
